Visitors who are permanently resident outside Iceland can reclaim VAT on qualifying purchases, as long as the goods leave Iceland within 3 months of purchase. At Keflavik Airport, the process happens in the departure area, and validation must be completed before check-in because the goods need to be presented.
What you need before you get to the airport
Iceland’s tax-free shopping scheme applies to visitors who are permanently resident outside Iceland.
To qualify, a single purchase receipt must meet the minimum qualifying purchase published at the refund calculator. The goods also need to be exported out of Iceland within 3 months of the purchase date.
At the time of purchase, ask the store for a tax-free form. The store fills it in and attaches the original receipt.
Where the VAT refund is processed at Keflavik
At Keflavik Airport, VAT refund processing is handled at a dedicated tax refund and currency exchange desk.
That desk is in the departure area of the airport. It is separate from the customs office used for higher-value claims.
What to bring: form, receipts, passport, and the goods
For validation, present the completed tax-free form, the original purchase receipt, and the purchased goods together.
You also need a passport or other ID that clearly shows permanent residence outside Iceland.
Which refund desk to use, by claim size
The form must be export validated before any refund is paid. That means it needs a stamp from customs or from the approved refund operator.
If the refund amount is under the minimum qualifying amount published at the calculator, the form is stamped at the tax refund or currency exchange desk.
If the refund amount is over the minimum qualifying amount published at the calculator, the form must be stamped at the customs office instead.
After export validation, the refund is paid by the tax-free company processing the claim, separately from customs. The payout is lower than the full VAT included in the price because the refund operator deducts a service fee, and the amount kept varies by operator and by claim size.
Timing it before your flight
Validation has to be completed before checking in luggage, because the purchased goods must still be available to present.
In practice, that means doing the VAT refund process before joining the check-in queue, not afterward.
