Lava Show Iceland is a live demonstration using real lava heated to 1,100 degrees Celsius. The Classic Experience runs approximately 45 to 55 minutes.
What happens at Lava Show
The presentation uses real lava that has been reheated and poured into a purpose-built showroom. During the demonstration, visitors see the lava glow and flow, hear it crackle as it cools, and feel its radiant heat. A presenter explains Icelandic volcanology and the behaviour of molten lava as it moves and cools. The volcanoes of Iceland guide provides more background on the subject.
Lava Show in Reykjavik and Vik
Lava Show has venues in Reykjavik and Vik. The Reykjavik venue is at Fiskislod 73 in the Grandi Harbour District, near the Old Harbour. The Vik venue is at Vikurbraut 5, just off Route 1 in the South Coast village of Vik. The Reykjavik presentation focuses on Iceland's volcanic systems and recent eruptions. The Vik presentation focuses on Katla volcano and South Coast geology. The guide to Reykjavik's Old Harbour covers the surrounding harbour district.
Show formats and visit length
The Classic Experience runs approximately 45 to 55 minutes. The Reykjavik venue also offers a Premium Experience with balcony seating, lounge access, a behind-the-scenes video, a welcome drink, and a lava souvenir. The Premium Experience is available only in Reykjavik. Shows run at scheduled times, and the venue advises arriving 15 to 20 minutes before the booked showtime. Compare current Lava Show ticket options before choosing a format and showtime.
Planning Lava Show with an Iceland trip
The experience is indoors and operates year-round. You can compare Reykjavik tours separately when organising other activities from the city. Check each tour's own itinerary if you want to know whether it includes admission to Lava Show.
What to bring
The showroom becomes warm near the lava, so the venue recommends light, comfortable clothing. Protective glasses are provided as part of the venue's safety procedures. The Iceland Packing List covers broader preparation for the rest of the trip.
