Videy is a small island in Kollafjordur just off central Reykjavik. A ferry reaches the island year-round from Skarfabakki pier in Sundahofn, with a crossing of about 5 minutes, and in summer an additional ferry sails from the Old Harbour in central Reykjavik, with a crossing of around 20 minutes.
Where Videy island is and how the ferry works
Videy island reykjavik refers to the island just off central Reykjavik, in Kollafjordur. The regular ferry connection runs year-round from Skarfabakki pier in Sundahofn. In summer, there is also an additional ferry from the Old Harbour in central Reykjavik.
The crossing time depends on the departure point. From Skarfabakki, the trip takes about 5 minutes. From the Old Harbour, it takes around 20 minutes.
The Imagine Peace Tower and its yearly light
The Imagine Peace Tower is a light installation created by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon. It projects a tall column of light from a white stone base engraved with Imagine Peace in many languages.
The tower is lit each year from 9 October, John Lennon's birthday, to 8 December, the anniversary of his death.
Videyjarstofa and the church Videyjarkirkja
Videyjarstofa was completed around 1755 and is one of Iceland's oldest stone buildings. It was designed by the Danish architect Nicolai Eigtved for Iceland's royal treasurer Skuli Magnusson.
Beside it stands the church Videyjarkirkja, which is among Iceland's oldest churches.
Richard Serra's Afangar (Milestones)
Richard Serra's Afangar, or Milestones, is a work of paired basalt columns placed around the island. The columns were installed in 1990 to frame views across Videy.
Walking paths and birdlife on the island
Walking paths cross the grassy island past picnic areas and interpretive signs. Videy is also home to many nesting bird species, including eider ducks, fulmars, and oystercatchers.
