Where Iceland's Public Toilets Are

The South Coast has 98 recorded public toilets. The Westfjords, off the Ring Road entirely, has 50.

That is 451 public toilets on record across Iceland, as of 19 September 2026. 195 (43.2%) are recorded as free, 41 (9.1%) as paid, and 215 (47.7%) have no fee recorded at all, so the free share is a floor, not a total.

Wheelchair accessible, where recorded

114 of the 190 toilets with accessibility data. 261 more have none recorded, so this describes the recorded minority, not every toilet.

39 of 451. Most (85.1%) have no opening hours recorded, and unknown hours do not mean a toilet is open.

Methodology and data

  • Source: public toilets tagged in OpenStreetMap, extract dated 19 September 2026. OpenStreetMap is community-edited, so coverage is incomplete, and a place with no recorded toilet may still have one.
  • Regions are assigned from each toilet's coordinates. Regions the Ring Road crosses: Reykjavík, South Coast, Southeast & Vatnajökull, East Iceland, North Iceland, West & Snæfellsnes.
  • Fee: "free" means OpenStreetMap records no charge; "paid" means a charge or a stated amount is recorded. Accessibility counts "yes" and "designated" as accessible, out of toilets with any accessibility value recorded.
  • Not computed: toilets per 100 km of road, which needs sourced road lengths, and the longest gap along the Ring Road, which needs a usable Route 1 geometry. The OpenStreetMap Route 1 relation did not reduce to a single line, so no gap figure is published.
  • Download all 451 points as CSV (id, name, region, town, fee, wheelchair, opening hours, latitude, longitude).
