During summer, more different species of duck gather on and around Lake Myvatn than anywhere else in the world. The lake also hosts many kinds of lake and marsh birds.
Why the ducks are here
Midges are abundant at Myvatn, and swarms of these tiny flies give the lake its name. Arctic char live in the lake, adding another part of its living environment.
A protected wetland
Myvatn is a legally protected conservation area. It also appears on the register of internationally important wetlands.
What the lake grows
The lake has prolific growth and an abundance of freshwater seaweed, along with great quantities of diatoms. Its shallow water allows the rays of the sun to reach the lake bed over its entire surface.
Watching birds around the shore
The shores of Myvatn have many coves and inlets, with small islets and skerries. Hofdi is a rocky promontory reaching into the waters of Lake Myvatn, with views over the coves and inlets.
