Do Icelandic petrol stations take foreign cards?

Self-service pumps generally need a chip-and-PIN card. Debit cards usually work, but US chip-and-signature cards are often declined at unmanned pumps, which is a genuine problem at 3am in the countryside. Should I fill up before driving into the Highlands?

Yes, and treat it as a rule rather than advice. F-roads have no fuel, distances between stations are long, and a 4x4 on gravel burns noticeably more than the same car on tarmac. Fill up in the last town before you turn off, not at the last station you happen to notice.
