Vigur is an island in Isafjardardjup in the Westfjords of Iceland.

The island

Vigur is one of three islands in Isafjardardjup, and it is named for its spear-like shape. The wildlife on Vigur makes it a favourite among travellers.

The birds

Puffins, eiders, guillemots and arctic terns abound on Vigur. Puffins are often called the penguins of the north.

Staying on the paths

Puffins on Vigur nest in burrows that cover much of the island. Travellers on Vigur must stick to the designated paths to avoid collapsing the puffin burrows.

Puffins and arctic terns

Puffins are clumsy fliers, and they stack their beaks with sand eels or small fish to feed their chicks. Arctic terns are fiercely protective.
