The total solar eclipse crosses Iceland on Wednesday 12 August 2026. The path of totality crosses western Iceland, including the Westfjords, Snaefellsnes, West Iceland, the Greater Reykjavik Area and the Reykjanes peninsula.
The choice is narrower than it looks
The longest totality on land in Iceland lasts 2 minutes and 13 seconds, at the westernmost points of the Westfjords. Latrabjarg and other remote locations in the Westfjords have a longer totality than most other areas.

The path of totality crosses the Westfjords, Snaefellsnes, West Iceland, the Greater Reykjavik Area and the Reykjanes peninsula. In the rest of Iceland, the eclipse is partial rather than total.
Designated viewing areas in towns
Designated viewing areas have been set up in urban locations. They have access to restrooms, parking and on-site assistance.
Designated viewing areas in the Westfjords include Isafjordur, Bolungarvik and Holmavik. Totality is shorter in the larger towns than at the westernmost points of the Westfjords.
Remote sites and what they cost you
Remote viewing sites in the Westfjords have scarce infrastructure, narrow access roads, tight parking and highly limited services. Emergency response times in remote areas will be longer than usual on eclipse day.
Weather at remote sites can change quickly, and travel there can take longer than expected. People are encouraged to use designated viewing areas rather than remote sites.
Watching from where you already are
Authorities recommend that people inside the path of totality watch from their homes or their local area. In most parts of western Iceland, it is possible to experience the eclipse from home or nearby surroundings.
