North Iceland is accessible by air, bus, and road. Akureyri provides connections for flights, buses, and onward travel.
Flying to Akureyri
Icelandair flies between Akureyri and Reykjavik Domestic Airport. Car rental companies operate at the Akureyri Airport terminal, and bus transfers and taxi services are also available there.
The bus from Reykjavik
Straeto runs a bus service between the Reykjavik BSI terminal and Akureyri, several times a week. Straeto publishes its schedules at straeto.is, and service is reduced in winter.
Driving the Ring Road north
Ring Road 1 is fully paved and open to all vehicles year round, subject to weather. Highland F-roads require a four wheel drive vehicle and are open in summer only.
Onward travel once you arrive
Straeto runs a bus between Akureyri and Myvatn, with limited service in winter. Public transport beyond Husavik is very limited. Remote destinations such as Raufarhofn and Thorshofn are best reached by private car.
