Hengifoss drops down a cliff of dark basalt layered with thin red bands of clay, coloured by iron from ancient volcanic ash.
Further down the same river is Litlanesfoss, framed by columnar basalt.

A path leads from the car park to the falls, taking about 40 to 60 minutes each way.
