Holmavik is a town on the Strandir coast of the Westfjords of Iceland.

The town

Holmavik is a small fishing town by the large fjord Steingrimsfjordur, and it is the largest town in its region. Visitors to Holmavik find a camping ground, various accommodation, restaurants and a swimming pool. Tours available at Holmavik include sailing and horseback riding.

A base for Strandir

Holmavik is a place to take a break and plan a Strandir trip, or to use as a base for day trips. The mountains around Holmavik offer hiking.

Sorcery and folklore

Strandir was the setting for a witch-hunting craze in Iceland. Because of its isolation, people in Strandir preserved stories of strange beings, ghosts and everyday witchcraft through the centuries. Holmavik has two centres of research related to folklore and the history of Icelandic sorcery: the Museum of Sorcery and Magic, and the University of Iceland's Folklore Research Institute.

Drangsnes, Djupavik and Nordurfjordur

Drangsnes has geothermal tubs on the Steingrimsfjordur beach. Djupavik has an abandoned herring factory that is popular with artists and musicians. Nordurfjordur is where the road ends, and it is home to the Krossneslaug swimming pool.

Checking road conditions before you set off

Road conditions and closures for Iceland are published by the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, road 60 crosses Dynjandisheidi and runs through the Dyrafjardargong tunnel, both serviced in winter, the old Hrafnseyrarheidi pass is no longer part of road 60 and is not ploughed in winter, and weather and road conditions in Iceland differ from what most visitors are used to and can change fast.
Use the Road Conditions to help plan your trip.
