How to read this
The summary counts every segment in the official feed: passable covers categories A and S; caution covers ice, snow, slippery, and difficult conditions; closed covers closed or impassable categories; and unknown covers unavailable or unreported status.
Mountain roads are identified from an F-number or an official mountain-road category. Icelandic section names may remain in the feed even when the condition description is in English. Always match the road number and section, not only the place name.
Conditions can change between updates. Check the official map again immediately before departure, especially after rain, snow, high winds, or rapid temperature changes.
Driving F-roads safely
- Never enter a closed or impassable road, and do not assume a historical opening date applies this year.
- Use a vehicle permitted for the route and by your rental agreement. An open status does not confirm vehicle suitability.
- Do not attempt a river crossing when depth, current, entry, exit, or your vehicle’s capability is uncertain. Turn back rather than take a risk.
- Carry warm clothing, food, water, communications, and a route plan. Tell someone where you are going when travelling remotely.
- Check weather, wind, daylight, road alerts, and official safety guidance before leaving paved roads.

Frequently asked questions
- Are Iceland’s F-roads open now?
- Opening varies by road and conditions. Use the live mountain-road board and confirm on the official Vegagerðin map at umferdin.is immediately before travel. A historical opening date is not proof that a road is open.
- What does “passable for mountain vehicles” mean?
- It means the official feed reports the mountain road as open for mountain vehicles. It does not mean the road is suitable for every vehicle, driver, rental agreement, or weather condition.
- Can I drive a normal rental car on an F-road?
- Generally, F-roads require an appropriate four-wheel-drive vehicle, and rental-company restrictions still apply. Check the road status, vehicle requirements, insurance terms, and your rental agreement before entering any mountain road.
- Are the historical opening dates a forecast?
- No. The table shows recorded dates from 2021–2025 and a five-year average. Snow, thaw, flooding, damage, and maintenance can make the current year substantially earlier or later.
- Is an open road safe to drive?
- An open status is not a safety guarantee. Weather and river levels can change quickly, and some routes involve rough surfaces or unbridged rivers. Follow official warnings, road signs, and local advice, and turn back when conditions are uncertain.
