Keldur is an old turf farm in the Rangarvellir district of south Iceland, inland from the Ring Road. It is open to visitors in the summer season. It lies among farmland below the highlands, near the volcano Hekla.
An old turf farm in the south
It is one of the oldest surviving turf farmhouses in the country. The buildings have turf and stone walls with timber fronts, in the old Icelandic style. The main hall has ancient timbers, some of the oldest in any Icelandic building.
Saga-age history
Keldur is mentioned in the medieval sagas and was the home of people from that era. There is an underground passage that may have been an escape route in times of conflict. It is now looked after as a historic site by the National Museum of Iceland.
