Landeyjahofn is a ferry harbour on the south coast of Iceland. The car and passenger ferry Herjolfur sails from here to Heimaey in the Vestmannaeyjar, the Westman Islands. From Landeyjahofn the crossing to Heimaey takes about 35 minutes.
The ferry to the Westman Islands
Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island of the group. The island is part of Vestmannaeyjar.
The crossing and the harbour
It is the shortest way to reach the islands, which lie just off the south coast. In rough weather or when sand builds up in the harbour, sailings can move to the harbour at Thorlakshofn, a longer crossing. The ferry runs year-round, with more sailings in summer. Landeyjahofn sits off the Ring Road, a short drive from the main south coast route. Sea and sailing conditions can be checked before travelling on safetravel.is.
