The Museum of Sorcery and Witchcraft is in Holmavik, on the Strandir coast of the Westfjords of Iceland.

What the museum covers

The exhibition at the Museum of Sorcery and Witchcraft tells the story of the witch-hunt era in Iceland and of how witchcraft is presented in Icelandic folklore. Guests at the museum learn about particular witchcraft cases and about different kinds of witchcraft.

Why Strandir

Strandir was the setting for a witch-hunting craze in Iceland. Because of its isolation, people in Strandir preserved stories of strange beings, ghosts and everyday witchcraft through the centuries.

The other research centre in Holmavik

Holmavik has two centres of research related to folklore and the history of Icelandic sorcery: the Museum of Sorcery and Magic, and the University of Iceland's Folklore Research Institute.

Holmavik

Holmavik is a small fishing town by the large fjord Steingrimsfjordur, and it is the largest town in its region. Visitors to Holmavik find a camping ground, various accommodation, restaurants and a swimming pool.
