Raudasandur is a beach of red sand in the southern Westfjords of Iceland.
The sand
The name Raudasandur means Red Sand. The tones of the sand at Raudasandur shift with the light and the weather.
Raudasandur sits in a string of coves whose sand ranges in colour from white through yellow and red to black. The sand also ranges in coarseness from very fine to sharp seashells.
Birds and seals
Raudasandur is a haven for seabirds and seals.
Walking to Latrabjarg from here
A popular hiking route to the Latrabjarg reserve starts at Raudasandur. Its later part follows the cliff edge from Geldingsskorardalur.
The track towards Latrabjarg is not a built-up path. There is deep erosion in the vegetation cover in many places from foot traffic.
The condition of the track changes with the weather and visibly worsens when summers are wet.
