Samuel Jonsson was a self-taught Icelandic artist who worked in Selardalur in the Westfjords.
The artist
Samuel Jonsson has been called the simple-hearted artist. He had no training in art.
What he built
When Samuel Jonsson received his old-age pension he built an art museum and a church in Selardalur. He made models of distant landmark buildings and painted works of art in Selardalur.
The statues at Brautarholt
At Brautarholt in Selardalur, Samuel Jonsson made statues of seals, lions and a seahorse.
Getting to Selardalur
Selardalur is in the southern part of the Westfjords. Road 60 crosses Dynjandisheidi and runs through the Dyrafjardargong tunnel, and both are serviced in winter. The old Hrafnseyrarheidi pass is no longer part of road 60 and is not ploughed in winter. Weather and road conditions in Iceland differ from what most visitors are used to and can change fast.
