Thingeyri is a village in the fjord Dyrafjordur in the Westfjords of Iceland.
The village
Thingeyri is a small village situated on a spit of land in Dyrafjordur. The culture and industry of Thingeyri have been shaped by the sea through the centuries, as in most other seaside villages in Iceland. Thingeyri provides a small shop, a post office, a bank and a swimming pool at the local sports hall.
Simbahollin
Simbahollin is a cafe in Thingeyri specialising in Belgian waffles, set in a renovated old Norwegian house.
The old workshops
Thingeyri has the oldest functioning mechanic workshop in Iceland. The Westfjords Heritage Museum has a Blacksmith's Workshop at Thingeyri.
Svalvogar and the Westfjords Alps
Svalvogar is a circular route between the fjords Dyrafjordur and Arnarfjordur, and it usually starts and finishes in Thingeyri. The Svalvogar route takes a narrow exposed coastal track around the headland, which should not be attempted at high tide. The route comes back along the Kaldbakur route, past the tallest mountain of the Westfjords in the so-called Westfjords Alps. Svalvogar is sometimes called the Dream Road, and it is not suitable for small cars.
