Where Vatnsnes is

The Vatnsnes peninsula is in northwest Iceland, west of the town of Hvammstangi.

Seal watching

Seals haul out on beaches and skerries along the coast, and there are marked viewing spots. The Icelandic Seal Center in Hvammstangi has exhibits about seals and where to see them. Seals are wild, so sightings vary, and viewers are asked to keep their distance.

Hvitserkur and the coast road

A gravel road runs around the peninsula, passing seal sites and the sea stack Hvitserkur. The basalt sea stack Hvitserkur rises from the sea off the eastern shore of the peninsula. Seabirds also nest along the coast.
