Glacier hikes in Iceland are guided walks on the ice. The right clothing matters for comfort and safety.

Dressing for a glacier hike

Warm layers are advised: a base layer, a warm mid layer, and a windproof, waterproof outer layer. Long trousers are better than shorts, and cotton is avoided because it stays wet. A hat and gloves help, and the weather on the ice can differ from the car park.

Layers, boots, and gear

Sturdy, warm, waterproof hiking boots are needed so that crampons can be strapped on. Guides provide the technical safety gear: crampons, a helmet, and an ice axe. Sunglasses and sunscreen help on bright days, as the ice reflects light. Boots can often be rented from the tour operator if you do not have suitable ones. Glaciers have crevasses, so the ice is walked only with a guide.
