Iceland's only wild reindeer live in the east of the country. They were brought from Norway in the 18th century. Reindeer are not found in the wild in other parts of Iceland.

The reindeer are wild and are not herded or farmed. Only the eastern herds survived long term.
Where they roam
In summer they range across the eastern highlands, and in winter they move down toward the lowlands and fjords, where they are easier to see. They live in herds and are seen from roads and farms in the region, though sightings are never guaranteed. Egilsstadir, the largest town in East Iceland, is a common base for exploring the region where the reindeer live. The population is managed, with a limited hunting season in autumn.
