It was a popular bathing spot until the 1970s. During eruptions between 1975 and 1984, the water rose above 50 degrees Celsius, too hot to bathe in safely. It has cooled slowly since. Visitors who want a soak in the area go instead to the purpose-built Myvatn Nature Baths nearby.
