Selfoss lies in northeast Iceland on the glacial river Jokulsa a Fjollum. Selfoss is within the Jokulsargljufur part of Vatnajokull National Park. The river is fed by meltwater from the Vatnajokull ice cap. The river has a greyish, silty colour.
Selfoss and Dettifoss on the same river
Selfoss lies just a few hundred metres upstream of Dettifoss. Dettifoss is often described as the most powerful waterfall in Europe by volume. The two waterfalls are usually visited together on the same walk.
Reaching the falls
There are viewpoints on both the east and west banks. The west bank is reached by Road 862. The east bank is reached by the rougher Road 864. Conditions should be checked on road.is.
