Hofn is a small fishing town on the southeast coast of Iceland, on the Ring Road. Its full name is Hofn i Hornafirdi. It sits between the sea and the Vatnajokull ice cap.
Where Hofn is
Hofn sits below Vatnajokull. From the town there are views across to Vatnajokull and its glacier tongues. Its harbour is a working fishing port, and the land around the town is flat farmland between the sea and the glacier.
The langoustine town
Hofn is known for langoustine, a small lobster caught in the surrounding waters, and holds an annual langoustine festival.
Glaciers and lagoons nearby
Hofn is a common base for visiting the glacier and its outlet lagoons. It lies east of the glacier lagoons Jokulsarlon and Fjallsarlon. Glacier and boat tours run from the wider area in the warmer months.
