Katla and the church's role
Vik sits below the Myrdalsjokull ice cap, under which lies the volcano Katla. Because the church stands on high ground, it has been identified as a gathering point in the event of a major Katla eruption and glacial flood. The village holds evacuation drills for that risk. The church is a small, working parish church.
