What and where Ytri Tunga beach is
Ytri Tunga is a beach on the south coast of Iceland's Snaefellsnes peninsula, by a farm of the same name. The name Ytri Tunga refers to a tongue of low-lying rocks that reach from the beach out to sea, where seals often rest.
Why the sand is golden, not black
Unlike most Icelandic beaches, which are black volcanic sand, Ytri Tunga is a golden-sand beach.
Seeing seals: harbour and grey seals on the rocks
Ytri Tunga is one of Iceland's most reliable places to see seals hauled out on the rocks. The colony often includes both harbour seals and grey seals.
Harbour seals
Harbour seals, with round faces and sleek bodies, are the most common seals seen at Ytri Tunga.
Grey seals
Grey seals, the larger of the two species, appear less frequently.
Best time of year and tide for seal watching
Seal numbers are highest in the summer months, roughly May to August, when the colony is most active. Low tide is the best time to visit, as more offshore rocks are exposed for seals to haul out on. Seals can be present year-round, though in smaller numbers during winter.
Watching seals responsibly and staying safe
Visitors are advised to keep a respectful distance and avoid disturbing the seals, which are wild animals. A minimum distance of about 50 metres from the seals is recommended for the safety of both animals and people. The rocks and shoreline can be slippery and tides change, so stay aware of your footing and the water. For live conditions before setting out, check safetravel.is and road.is.
