This guide covers Djúpavík in the Westfjords, its herring factory and the remote municipality around it.
The road to Djúpavík
The drive through the Árneshreppur municipality is one of the most scenic in Iceland, past tiny settlements. Travellers in winter need to check the weather and road conditions before visiting the area.
The herring factory
Djúpavík grew around a herring factory in a small creek by the fjord Reykjarfjörður. A later factory in Djúpavík was the largest concrete house in Iceland when it was built, and it is now an exhibition building.
Árneshreppur today
The houses in Djúpavík are now used only as summer dwellings, apart from the hotel, which is open all year. Djúpavík is part of Árneshreppur, the least populous municipality in Iceland. Most visitors reach the area by car.
